The Capacity and Resilience for Rail (CaRe4Rail) project develops and demonstrates technical, operational and safety-related solutions for the transformation of rail transport into digitally networked and automated rail transport. To this end, the necessary information and management systems, systems to ensure driving stability, efficient, safe and robust levels of automation, condition monitoring and the division of functions between humans and automation are being developed and their interaction ensured. The system benefits of energy efficiency and safety, cost efficiency, reliability and flexibility of the rail transport system will be significantly improved. In addition, the topic of immersive visualisations in rail transport will be examined.

CaRe4Rail builds on the results and preliminary work of Train Control and Management (TraCo).

The project vision and mission are summarised in the following five main work packages:

  • Technologies and tools for vehicle localisation, condition monitoring and predictive maintenance as well as safeguarding automated train control systems
  • Investigation of measures to increase transient crosswind stability
  • Infrastructural and human factors requirements for robust operational management
  • Europe's rail
  • Immersive visualisations in rail transport
