Flow field during re-entry burn with three engines at five times the speed of sound
The video shows a test in the Hypersonic Wind Tunnel (H2K) in Cologne with a model of a booster re-entering the atmosphere in reverse flight. During re-entry ignition, three active nozzles are usually ignited against the direction of flight in order to slow down the stage so that it becomes less hot in the subsequent flight phase in the atmosphere. During the experiment in the wind tunnel, the engine jets were generated using compressed air. The model is mounted horizontally. The inflow comes from the left and the right half of the picture shows the tail section of the stage. Due to the interaction of the external flow with the engine jets, the overall flow field is highly unsteady.
