Digitalisation research areas

Research on digitalisation provides stimuli for the economy, helps shape innovative technologies, methods and processes in an application-oriented manner and uses these for research and science management. The research areas work together in a supportive manner. Artificial intelligence methods and tools are important enablers for the analysis of large amounts of data as well as for autonomous systems and digital design processes. Data management, in turn, is the core basis for handling the ever-increasing amounts of data that arise in connection with digital engineering.

Artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is one of the most important future technologies for digitalisation. AI already plays a central role in many areas for DLR and related industries. As an enabling technology, the topic also has great innovation potential in research, development and management.

Cyber-physical engineering

Cyber-physical engineering focuses on topics such as the simulation of complex processes, digital twins and virtual certification. DLR has extensive experience with the interface between digital and physical engineering.

Data

DLR has large numbers of high-quality data repositories, for example from Earth observation. Its large-scale research facilities also play an important role in providing data. Research data management facilitates access to DLR’s data assets.

Innovative autonomous systems

Highly automated and autonomous systems are a technology field of the future. Use cases with high relevance for DLR research are autonomous mobility, intelligent assistance systems, autonomous systems in production and space exploration.
