The authors investigated the effect of gases released during a pressure drop on the water hammer.

Mr. Cristiano Bombardieri, Mr. Tobias Traudt and Ms. Chiara Manfletti received the Best Paper Award at the 12th International Pressure Surges Conference this year. The organizers of the conference, which is held every three years, praised the outstanding quality of the DLR employees' scientific articles. Rather unusually, both of the authors' articles were honored. The papers are entitled "Effect of the Dissolved Gas on the Pressure Surge during the Filling Process of Spacecraft Feedlines" and "High Speed Imaging of Water Hammer with Column Separation". The former deals with the processes during the first phase of the flight of satellites, in which very high pressure surges can occur in the fuel lines. The authors investigated how gases released during a pressure drop affect the pressure shock. The second paper showed how the pressure waves during a pressure shock cause water in a pipe to evaporate and how these vapor bubbles spread in the pipe.
