Integration and Risk Assessment of Ship Energy Systems

Research Project: RISAR

With the RISAR project, the Ship Integration department of the Institute of Maritime Energy Systems aims to develop a novel software application for the parametric design, integration, and risk assessment of ship energy systems using alternative fuels like methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia. This software will enable designers to assess the feasibility, benefits, and risks of different design options while ensuring safety and regulatory compliance, ultimately fostering innovative solutions in the maritime industry to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

Project duration: June 2023 - December 2025

The maritime industry is under increasing pressure to reduce its Green House Gas (GHG) emissions. As a result, alternative bunker fuels, such as methanol, hydrogen, and ammonia are increasingly coming into focus. The use of such fuels requires new technical solutions, which introduces new design possibilities, but also challenges, in particular in terms of safety and regulatory compliance.

In this context, the RISAR project (Risk-Based Design of Robust Integrated Ship Energy Systems based on Alternative Fuels for Newbuilds & Retrofits) is developing a novel software application for preliminary parametric design, integration, and risk assessment of ship energy systems powered by alternative fuels. The software application will help designers to systematically and holistically assess the feasibility, merits, and risks of different design alternatives. This will make it possible to explore a larger solution space, enabling new innovative solutions that may be outside the present solution space. To support regulatory approval, the goals and functional requirements defined by IMO’s Interim Guidelines for the Safety of Ships Using Methyl/ Ethyl Alcohol as Fuel will be considered.
