Scientist at Carl Ossietzky University Oldenburg receives Innovationspreis Niedersachen 2023
Shipbuilding engineer Dr. Sovanna Chhoeung was awarded first place in the "Vision" category of the Innovationspreis Niedersachen 2023, which was presented to her by Lower Saxony's Science Minister Falko Mohrs (second from left). She was accompanied at the award ceremony in the Landesmuseum Hannover by her doctoral supervisor Prof. Dr. Axel Hahn and Ortwin Muehr from Reederei Offen (left and right of Sovanna Chhoeung). Also present were the Chairman of the Lower Saxony Innovation Network Prof. Dr. Sascha Spoun (first from left), Lower Saxony's Minister of Economic Affairs Olaf Lies (second from right) and Dr. Thomas Schulmeyer, Managing Director of the Lower Saxony Innovation Centre (right).
"Maritime shipping: AI-supported prediction of rolling movements"
As part of her doctorate at the Carl Ossietzky University of Oldenburg, Sovanna Chhoeung developed an AI-based prediction of rolling movements, in particular parametric rolling, in order to provide the ship's command with a recommendation for the course or speed. For this purpose, she used a Random Forest algorithm, which was trained using a database set up. The prediction is currently two minutes and thus enables the ship's command to initiate countermeasures to parametric rolling in good time. Chhoeung's vision is to help protect people, cargo, the ship and the environment.
