In solar thermal tower power plants, thousands of mirrors are used to reflect sunlight to a radiation receiver at the top of a tower. A heat transfer medium circulates in the metal tubes of the radiation receiver, absorbing the heat and transporting it to other locations at the plant. The heat can be used, for example, to evaporate water and drive a steam turbine, which in turn generates electricity. If more heat is available than is needed, a storage tank can absorb the heat and release it as required.
