Institute of Lightweight Systems

Would you like to become part of our innovation-driven research team and help shape the future of lightweight system? We develop and test new lightweight construction technologies for resource-saving and climate-friendly structures in the aerospace, transport, energy and security sectors. Our vision is intelligent lightweight system construction for an emission-free tomorrow.

Our research portfolio includes high-performance materials, analysis methods for the entire life cycle, characteristic value-based functional lightweight designs, efficient manufacturing processes for fibre composite structures on an industrial scale and the end-to-end digitalisation of the entire process chain.

Adaptronics opens up opportunities to provide lightweight structures with additional capabilities. For example, CFRP structures can be enabled to change their shape, actively reduce vibrations, minimise sound radiation from the vibrating structure or diagnose their own condition using adaptronics materials and technologies.

What specialities are we looking for?

The aim of lightweight system construction is to integrate active and passive additional functions into the lightweight structure in line with the motto "Everything contributes". To achieve this goal, six scientific departments at the institute work together in coordination with five application-orientated business areas.

With its broad range of services and creative scientists, the institute is a partner for industry, universities, research institutions, ministries and regulatory authorities.
