Institute of Solar Research
The Institute of Solar Research develops concentrating solar systems for the generation of heat, power and fuel.
As part of ongoing research and development activities, bachelor's and master's thesis projects and internships are regularly offered to European students in the fields of physics, mechanical engineering and metrology.
The projects implemented at the Plataforma Solar de Almería (PSA, owned by the Spanish research centre CIEMAT), focus on the development of solar thermal power plants. The technologies employed for this extend the processes used in conventional thermal power plants, providing the turbines or other motive power devices with the energy they need as steam or hot gas generated with concentrated solar radiation. In addition, they undertake projects relating to the chemical conversion of materials under concentrated radiation and also thermal energy storage.
Other key areas of research focus on the solar environment for power plants, such as atmospheric absorption, high temporal resolution geographically-based predictions of solar radiation, the effects of pollution, circumsolar radiation and the calibration of radiation sensors. The projects are aimed at the development and testing of key components, subsystems or complete facilities, and tend to be cooperative projects with international partners from research institutions and industry.
Bachelor's and master's thesis projects and internships at the PSA offer students the chance to participate in the development of such systems. This work is usually in the fields of design, thermodynamics, energy technology, radiation measurement, optical measurement technology, or measurement and control technology.
Each placement has a duration of at least six months.
