Effective and sustainable noise reduction on existing aircraft

Making medium-range aircraft quieter

According to a survey by the German Environment Agency, around 40% of the population feels annoyed by aircraft noise. It is therefore necessary to limit the impact of aircraft noise as effectively as possible in the future. But which measures make sense and, above all, can be implemented promptly and as cost-effectively and sustainably as possible? The development and establishment of completely new and quieter aircraft takes decades. The project participants in the DLR project LU(FT)² 2030 are therefore concentrating on quieter aircraft designs and noise reduction measures on existing aircraft.

In DLR projects that have already been completed, such as Low Noise ATRA (LNATRA), scientists have already been able to demonstrate the great potential of this approach in real flyover tests with source noise-reducing technologies on a conventional aircraft. And in the predecessor project SIAM (Schall-Immissions-Armes Mittelstreckenflugzeug), the project team also reproduced the noise reduction measures from LNATRA in an aerodynamic and acoustic test in the Braunschweig low-speed wind tunnel (DNW-NWB) using a new detailed wind tunnel half-model of the A320.

In LU(FT)² 2030, the project partners will now build on the results from LNATRA and SIAM and create a solid virtual foundation on which new measures can be tested quickly and cost-effectively. This includes:

  • Recreating LNATRA in the wind tunnel. To this end, the A320 wind tunnel model from SIAM will be equipped with an engine simulator that realistically generates thrust and noise within the wind tunnel
  • High-fidelity virtual simulation of wind tunnel and flyover tests to establish and validate the methods
  • Assessment of aircraft in realistic environments and air traffic
  • Application of virtual capabilities for new and improved noise mitigation measures

Since the project participants in LU(FT)² 2030 will as well make the noise reduction effects audible, they shall be able to make reliable statements about the extent to which noise pollution for people is actually improved by the noise reduction measures, in addition to the purely theoretical reduction of noise.
