Since 1959, DLR employees have been researching, developing and testing innovative technologies for chemical space propulsion at a test stand infrastructure that is unique in Europe. In addition to space flight, other key areas of research have developed over the decades from this extensive know-how. These include hydrogen applications, the use of artificial intelligence and applied safety research.

Space Flight

DLR employees at the Lampoldshausen site are working to make the space flight of tomorrow more efficient, more cost-effective and safer with innovative propulsion systems and environmentally friendly propellants.

Hydrogen

The aim is to develop sustainable technologies based on regeneratively produced hydrogen. Technologies and know-how from decades of working with hydrogen in space flight are being transferred to the mobility and energy sectors.

Artificial Intelligence

Testing space propulsion and hydrogen technologies is a challenging task. Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly important in order to accelerate the development of new generations of propulsion systems and hydrogen systems. The DLR Institute of Space Propulsion is pooling the expertise of its research departments to achieve this goal.

The European Test Center

With its scientific expertise, unique infrastructure and openness to the use of future-oriented and cost-reducing technologies in the fields of digitalization and artificial intelligence, Lampoldshausen has developed into the European research and technology location for liquid-chemical space propulsion and hydrogen applications.

Technology Transfer from Space Flight

DLR is focusing on dovetailing research and industry even more closely. This is achieved by promoting the transfer of knowledge and technologies from research to application. The aim is to transfer the knowledge gained from the core competence of space to other sectors and to improve technologies for society.

Applied Safety Research

Safety is one of the basic needs of every human being and is an integral part of our everyday lives. In Applied Safety research at the DLR site in Lampoldshausen supports and develops safety-related research activities in the fields of space, energy and digitalization.

Promotion of Young Talents

DLR attaches great importance to the promotion of young scientists. To achieve this, the DLR Institute of Space Propulsion implements the integrated concept of the DLR_Academic_Lab at university level and the DLR_School_Lab at school level.
