Hydrogen

A bird's eye view of the DLR in Lampoldshausen
With the expansion of the hydrogen test infrastructure, the DLR site in Lampoldshausen is extending its expertise in the field of hydrogen-based technologies.

With its experience and expertise in the development, construction and operation of liquid and gaseous hydrogen systems, the DLR Institute of Space Propulsion is making a decisive contribution to the energy transition in Germany, in which hydrogen is a key element. This includes not only the operation of a DLR electrolyser for the production of green hydrogen from the neighboring wind farm and the realization of a CO2-neutral site, but also the construction and operation of H2 test facilities.

In cooperation with industry, other DLR institutes and external research institutions, topics from the fields of energy, aviation and transportation are being worked on. These include, for example, fuel cells and ground refueling systems for aviation. The focus here is particularly on liquid hydrogen tanks for aviation and shipping. The DLR Institute also contributes its expertise on general standardization and safety strategies for handling hydrogen.
