Department Aerogels and Aerogel Composites

Aerogels are open-pored, nanostructured materials that can consist of up to 99% air. In the Aerogels and Aerogel Composites department, materials based on organic and inorganic aerogels are developed from the laboratory to the pilot plant scale to the prototype.

Department High Temperature and Functional Coatings

Our institute develops both metallic and ceramic protective layers for metallic, ceramic and composite materials. The development of functional layers extends to a wide variety of application areas.

Department Metallic and Hybrid Materials

We focus on the development, characterization and evaluation of light metals and high-temperature alloys. For this purpose, experimental methods as well as modeling and simulation tools are used, with the focus on multi-scalar, multi-dimensional methods.

Department Structural and Functional Ceramics

The Structural and Functional Ceramics Department develops ceramic materials and technologies for applications in aviation, space travel and the energy sector.

Department Thermoelectric Materials and Systems

Our mission is the development of powerful thermoelectric modules and generators (TEG) that convert (waste) heat flows into electrical energy for mobile or stationary applications, as thermal sensors and Peltier heat pumps in vehicle technology, in energy systems and for aerospace usage.

Department Experimental and numeric Methods

The Experimental and Numerical Methods department focuses on methods that are based on precise knowledge of material behavior under mechanical and thermal stress.

Cross-Sectional Group: Mechanical Testing of Materials

We are the central contact point for questions on the subject of materials testing and offers the comprehensive mechanical characterization and evaluation of materials as scientific and technical cross-sectional services for all departments of the institute as well as for external clients.

Cross-Sectional-Group: Analytical Research and Metallography

Light microscopy as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopy are typically used for microanalytical questions. Further information about existing phases and textures can be obtained using X-ray diffraction methods.
