Remote detection of harmful and hazardous substances
The laser-based remote detection of chemical, biological and explosive (CBE) harmful and hazardous substances will continue to be of great relevance in defence technology research and civil security research in the future, with specific requirements from end users. Here, the institute is developing solutions in close consultation with end users.
The institute develops laser-based remote detection methods for detecting chemical, biological and explosive hazardous substances from a safe distance. This allows countermeasures to be initiated at an early stage in the event of a crisis and minimises the risk to the population and emergency services. Spectroscopic measurement methods such as LIBS (Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy), LIF (Laser Induced Fluorescence) and Raman spectroscopy are being investigated and further developed for this purpose. Application-relevant aspects such as eye safety, the influence of daylight and weather as well as the identification of substances against a natural background play a fundamental role in the validation of the methods.
