Servo-hydraulic test facility
This large-scale facility at the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) Institute of Materials Research in Cologne operates ten uniaxial and biaxial servo-hydraulic testing machines, making it the beating heart of the Institute’s mechanical materials testing capability.
What makes the test facility special is its flexibility; the machines can be retrofitted and adapted according to the requirements of different projects and tasks. As such, this system is useful for the entire scope of materials science offered by the Institute, and also serves external partners and clients in the field of materials testing, assessment and characterisation of metallic, ceramic, composite and hybrid materials.
Test forces for any load conditions
When used in combination with the Institute's centralised microanalysis and metallography facilities, the test facility enables researchers to comprehensively examine materials in terms of fracture mechanics.
The parameters and data generated with these systems are used in numerical models across the whole Institute and by external partners and clients. They also directly support scientific papers and the expansion of knowledge in materials science.
