Space-based systems are playing an increasingly important role for security in Germany and Europe. Critical space infrastructure must be protected. Among other things, this includes the ability to equip small satellites weighing up to 500 kilograms with communications, navigation and Earth observation instruments, sensors and systems within a few days or even hours, bring them into low-Earth orbit and to operate them there. This is referred to as a 'Responsive Space' capability. AeroSpacePark Trauen was launched at DLR’s Trauen site on 1 September 2020. It is intended to serve as a national centre of excellence for 'Responsive Space'. Technologies encompassed by the architecture, which is made up of space, ground, launch and mission segments, are to be studied and further developed in Trauen. As Germany's centre for aerospace research, DLR has the expertise in the diverse technology areas needed to implement Vision 2035.
