TAIEX-workshop on environmental regulations in the air transport sector
- Successful TAIEX-workshop with Moldovan stakeholders on environmental regulations in the air transport sector in Chisinau, Moldova
- Focus on the initiatives CORSIA, ICAO State Action Plans and ReFuelEU Aviation for the sustainable development of the aviation sector
In March 2024, at the invitation of the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) of the Republic of Moldova and TAIEX, an extensive workshop took place. Researchers from the German Aerospace Center (DLR) Institute of Air Transport seized the opportunity to familiarise Moldovan stakeholders from the civil aviation sector with important environmental policy measures in international air transport. Among the participants were representatives from the CAA and ministries, as well as from the airlines Aerotranscargo, Fly One, and HiSky, along with representatives from the energy sector.
The workshop was specifically designed to discuss and explain three significant initiatives for sustainable air transport:
- CORSIA, the offsetting system of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aimed at reducing CO2 emissions in international air transport by compensating for these emissions,
- the ICAO State Action Plans Initiative to reduce CO2 emissions in aviation through a structured action plan involving participating states,
- and ReFuelEU Aviation, a measure introduced by the European Commission to promote the use of Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) in EU air transport, aiming to reduce environmental impact and make aviation more sustainable.
The event was organised within the framework of TAIEX (Technical Assistance and Information Exchange instrument of the European Commission), an instrument promoting technical assistance and information exchange. TAIEX aims to support public administrations in aligning, applying, and enforcing EU legislation through expert support and facilitating the exchange of best EU practices.
Discussions during the workshop were highly productive, with participants contributing their opinions and relevant questions. The DLR and Moldovan representatives emphasised the importance of closer collaboration and knowledge transfer regarding these significant aviation topics. This initiative underscores the importance of international cooperation and joint efforts for research and sustainable development in the aviation sector.
