The NASA Magellan mission carried out between 1990 and 1994, with its radar data with a resolution of around 100 metres, laid the foundation for today's knowledge of our inner neighbouring planet, similar to the Viking probes on Mars together with Soviet missions in the preceding 15 years. This view of the hemisphere centred at 90 degrees east longitude has an effective resolution of around three kilometres. The radar data has been colour-coded to show the topography. Low-lying plains are shown in blue, volcanic lowlands in green, and beige and reddish coloured areas are highlands reminiscent of the continents raised above the oceans on Earth. The ESA EnVision mission will use radar data to provide a far higher level of resolution for topographical mapping.
