Example of a single HRSC high-altitude image
Example of a single HRSC high-altitude image (HRSC orbit number 21,688_0000, acquired on 28 February 2021: the background is a shaded relief image produced using attitude measurements acquired by NASA's Mars Observer Laser Altimeter roughly 25 years ago). On the left is a red-green-blue-composite showing the surface in visible light. Note the light-blue colours of the northern and southern limb owing to the shallower view of the camera through the martian atmosphere resulting in the light passing through more atmosphere and thus a stronger atmospheric influence on the images. Image sections such as this were excluded from the global mosaic. On the right is an infrared-red-green-composite. Such unusual views including the infrared channel are a way of examining the relationship of the surface's infrared reflectivity with its reflectivity for other colours. They are also inspected to detect artefacts or gaps in the input data.
