Collapse structures on the shield volcano Ascraeus Mons
Collapse structures on the shield volcano Ascraeus Mons
In the lower regions of the southern flank of the volcano Ascraeus Mons, there is a region about 70 kilometres across with a multitude of basin-like structures, referred to as pit crater chains. These downslope, circular depressions merge into successive collapse basins that connect into elongated structures, forming chains of troughs several hundred metres deep. There is agreement that these structures were formed by the surface collapsing into an underground void. However, different processes are under discussion regarding the origin of these voids.
