DLR at the Global Space and Technology Convention 2016
Gerd Gruppe, Member of the DLR Executive Board responsible for the DLR Space Administration, accepted an invitation from the Singapore Space and Technology Association (SSTA) to represent the German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) at Southeast Asia's largest aerospace convention – Global Space & Technology Convention 2016 (GSTC) – which was held in Singapore on 11 and 12 February.
"The global aerospace sector is constantly changing," says Gruppe. "Here, Southeast Asia is among the most exciting regions. As a space agency, DLR is constantly looking to find potential partners in this market and support our industry whenever possible."
On 11 February in Singapore, Gruppe moderated the podium discussion between space agencies entitled ‘Space Agencies' Priorities and Strategy for Investment, Development and International Cooperation’. In addition, the member of the DLR Executive Board took part in bilateral discussions, for example with the SSTA President Jonathan Hung and with representatives from other agencies and the industrial sector. Their discussions focused on new technologies and business models, the commercialisation of spaceflight and the transfer of technology between space and non-space domains. In particular, the participants concentrated on new cooperation opportunities in these fields.
In addition, a team from the The German Space Agency at DLR joined with a consortium comprising TU Berlin, RWTH Aachen, FZI Karlsruhe, RFI Dortmund and JKIC to present the project iBOSS (Intelligent Building Blocks for On-Orbit Satellite Servicing and Assembly), a revolutionary concept intended to increase the sustainability and efficiency of future space infrastructure. The concept developed as part of the iBOSS project is on show at a stand in the GSTC exhibition at a dedicated iBOSS booth much visited and well received. Minister Ishwaran (Minstry for Trade and Industry, MTI, Singapore) paid the iBOSS booth a visit and exchanged valuable views with the team. DLR project manager Daniel Nölke presented ‘iBOSS’ during the 'Space Tech Innovative Applications' session.
