At the Apollo 16 landing site, Charles Duke (image) and John Young were tasked with confirming the geologists’ remote assessment that the landscape was of volcanic origin. They cracked the rocks open with a hammer and observed that they were formed by asteroid impacts - thus refuting the theory.
