The GREAT terahertz spectrometer
The GREAT terahertz spectrometer is mounted on the telescope flange inside the pressurised cabin of the SOFIA airborne observatory. The telescope mirror is in a hermetically sealed space at the rear of the aircraft. The hatch that exposes the telescope is only opened during flight.
