The German-Russion PKE experiment marked the start of scientific research on board the ISS. Here Sergei Krikalev is experimenting with the 'bin'. PKE remains synonymous with a specific experimental facility on the International Space Station and the associated programme of research into complex plasmas. The first scientific experiment was carried out on board the ISS as part of this collaborative project in February 2001, with assistance from the first permanent crew.
