Doctor's Degree Dr. sc. - Hannah Jörg

21 December 2017 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Hannah Jörg defended her doctoral thesis yesterday, on 20 December 2017, at the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the ETH Zurich. Her thesis is entitled "Multi-Frequency Polarimetric SAR Tomography for the 3-D Characterization and Monitoring of Agricultural Crops". The doctoral degree "Dr. sc." is awarded from the ETH Zurich, Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering. Congratulations, Hannah!

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Felipe Queiroz de Almeida

19 December 2017 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Felipe Queiroz de Almeida defended his doctoral thesis yesterday, on 18 December 2017, at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with distinction! His work is entitled "Multichannel Staggered SAR for High-Resolution Wide-Swath Imaging". Congratulations, Felipe!

Doctor's Degree Ph.D. - Li Dexin

06 December 2017 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Li Dexin successfully defended his thesis on 27 November 2017 at the National University of Defence Technology (NUDT), School of Electronic Science and Engineering, Changsha, China with great enthusiasm of his reviewers! His thesis entitled "Processing Aspects, Simulation and Analysis of the Impact of the Atmosphere on GEO SAR Observations" had been under supervision of Dr. Marc Rodriguez-Cassola (see pictures, right), here at the Intitute, who also joined him for this defence in China. Congratulations, Li Dexin, from all colleagues here at the Institute!

Helmut Rott Doctoral Candidate Award - Silvan Leinss

24 October 2017 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Silvan Leinss (ETH Zurich) has been awarded the Helmut Rott Doctoral Candidate Award on October 19, 2017. Silvan had a talk "Depths, Anisotropy and Water Equivalent of Snow estimated by Radar Interferometry and Polarimetry" here at the Institute on October 20, 2015, successfully defended his thesis in November 2015 and received his doctorate in March 2016 from the ETH Zurich. All the best from all colleagues!

Otto Lilienthal Sabbatical 2017 - Marwan Younis

24 October 2017 - We are very glad to announce that our collegue Prof. Dr. Marwan Younis has been awarded the "Otto Lilienthal" Sabbatical 2017 from the Society of Friends of the German Aerospace Center (GvF). The Awards presentation took place during a scientific colloquium at DLR Bonn on October 19, 2017. Best wishes from all colleagues!

Young Scientist Award for Excellence - Hannah Jörg

29 September 2017 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Hannah Jörg received the "Young Scientist Award for Excellence" at the Kleinheubacher Tagung, 25 - 27 September 2017, from Awards Commitee Chairman Prof. Klinkenbusch (University Kiel). The title of her contribution was "Polarimetric SAR Tomography for Monitoring Changes in Agricultural Crops". Congratulations, Hannah!

IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society Letter Prize Paper Award 2017 - M. Villano, G. Krieger, and A. Moreira

31 July 2017 - We are very happy to announce that our colleagues Michelangelo Villano, Gerhard Krieger and Alberto Moreira, Microwaves and Radar Institute, received the 2017 GRS Letter Paper Prize Award, for their paper “Onboard Processing for Data Volume Reduction in High-Resolution Wide-Swath SAR”. The certificate has been handed over to them by IEEE GRSS President Professor Adriano Camps during IGARSS 2017 in Forth Worth, Texas.

ITG Dissertation Prize 2017 - Michelangelo Villano

14 July 2017 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Dr. Michelangelo Villano has been awarded the "ITG Dissertation Prize 2017" for his thesis entitled „Staggered Synthetic Aperture Radar“. ITG is VDE's Informationstechnische Gesellschaft (Association of Engineers in Information Technology) and VDE is Germany's IEEE-like association of electrical engineers. The Prize will be presented to him during an event taking place on November 27, 2017 in the "Berlin-Brandenburgischen Akademie der Wissenschaften", Berlin. Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation Young Scientist Award - Michelangelo Villano

12 July 2017 - We are very proud to announce that the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation will be awarding their Young Scientist Award to our colleague Michelangelo Villano on December 13, 2017 during a ceremonious colloquium in Schwanau, Germany. Since 1977, the Werner-von-Siemens-Ring Foundation acknowledges with this award highly promising results of young scientists. This award will give him the opportunity to be part of a broad network of young scientists who are engaged in promoting technology research. The foundation provides for this purpose an annual, dedicated budget for related events and publications. The awards ceremony will be accompanied by a 15-minute talk of the award winner. He will receive a silver medal with a relief of Werner von Siemens and a certificate with the appreciation of his recent results.

Best Poster Award - Paola Rizzoli et. al.

20 March 2017 - We are pleased to announce that our colleagues Paola Rizzoli, Michele Martone, Christopher Wecklich, Carolina Gonzalez, Jose Luis Bueso Bello, Paolo Valdo, Gerhard Krieger and Manfred Zink won the BEST POSTER AWARD with their poster "Deriving Forest/Non-Forest Maps from TanDEM-X Interferometric SAR Data" at the WorldCover 2017 Conference. The winners were announced during the conference closing session. Congratulations from all the Insitute!

Doctor's Degree Dr. sc. - Octavio Ponce

22 December 2016 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Octavio Ponce successfully defended yesterday his PhD thesis "Multicircular Holographic SAR Tomography over Forested Areas" at the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the ETH Zurich. Ocavio already left DLR and will now work for a Google startup. Congratulations, Octavio, and all the best!

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Muriel Pinheiro

20 Dezember 2016 - It is a great pleasure to congratulate our colleague Muriel Pinheiro for the very successful defense of her PhD thesis "Multi-Mode SAR Interferometry for High-Precision DEM Generation" yesterday, 20 December 2016, at Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). She passed with distinction. With the results of her thesis we are now able to create Digital Surface Models (DSM) with nearly laser-scanning quality. Her results do also apply to TanDEM-X data for example. Congratulations, Muriel!

Full Professor at Eidgenössische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zurich - Irena Hajnsek

09 December 2016 - Prof. Dr. Irena Hajnsek, DLR Mircowaves and Radar Institute and up to now Associate Professor at ETH Zurich, has been appointed Full Professor of Earth Observation and Remote Sensing at ETH Zurich. Irena Hajnsek is one of the world’s leading scientists in the field of remote sensing using radar waves and in the application of satellite radar data. A key focus of her work is the development of bio/geophysical inversion models for determining environmental parameters such as soil moisture from multi-parametric SAR data. Her results contribute significantly to improving global environmental monitoring and forecasting harvests and food security. SET Panel Excellence Award - Andrey Osipov

22 November 2016 - We are glad to announce that our colleague Dr. Andrey Osipov, Microwaves and Radar Institute, has been awarded the NATO SET Panel Excellence Award for his excellent contributions to the SET Task Group on „Metamaterials for Defence and Security Applications“. "DLR Science Award" in recognition of scientific achievements - Michelangelo Villano

22 November 2016 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Dr. Michelangelo Villano has been awarded with the DLR Science Award "DLR-Wissenschaftspreis". This Prize is awarded every year primarily to young scientists at DLR in honor of their outstanding scientific achievements which must be documented in refereed scientific journals. The awarded work of Michelangelo is entitled: “Staggered SAR: High-Resolution Wide-Swath Imaging by Continuous PRI Variation”, published in IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Vol. 52, No. 7, July 2014. Franz-Xaver-Erlacher-Förderpreis 2016 - Nida Sakar

The title of her contribution was "Large-Baseline InSAR for Precise Topographic Mapping: A Dual-Baseline Framework for TanDEM-X Interferometric Data". Congratulations, Muriel!

29 September 2016 - We are very glad to annonce that our colleague Octavio Ponce and co-authors Felipe Queiroz de Almeida and Tobias Rommel, Microwaves and Radar Institute, received the OHB - Award "Future of Radar Based Earth Observation" at the 15th Space Generation Congress (SGC) / 67th International Astronautical Congress (IAC), September 21-30, 2016 in Guadalajara, Mexico, for their contribution "Multiple-Input Multiple-Output Circular SAR for High Altitude Pseudo Satellite". IEEE TGRS Prize Paper Award 2016 - Andreas Reigber and Marc Jäger

19 July 2016 - We may announce that our colleagues Andreas Reigber and Marc Jäger have been honored as co-authors of the award winning article "NL-SAR: A Unified Nonlocal Framework for Resolution-Preserving (Pol)(In)SAR Denoising" of Charles Deledalle et. al. (he has also been a guest scientist at our institute) at IGARSS 2016 in Begijng. Their journal contribution won the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society "2016 Transactions Prize Paper Award". Congratulations from all colleagues!

EUSAR 2016 - Best Paper Award - Gerhard Krieger, Tobias Rommel, Alberto Moreira

17 June 2016 - We are happy to announce that our colleagues Gerhard Krieger, Tobias Rommel and Alberto Moreira, Microwaves and Radar Institute, received the Best Paper Award for their paper "MIMO SAR Tomography" at the European Synthetic Aperture Radar Conference, EUSAR 2016, in Hamburg, Germany. Professor at the Technische Universität (TU) Berlin - Andreas Reigber

16 June 2016 - We may announce that PD Dr. Andreas Reigber has been appointed Professor at the Technische Universität Berlin for remote sensing and digital image processing. The University recognizes therewith his outstanding achievements in research and teaching in this field. Dr. Reigber is already giving lectures at TU Berlin since 2002 about photogrammetry and radar. He habilitated in 2008 and has been appointed as Privat-Dozent (PD) since then at TU Berlin. We wish him every success for his research, both at the University and at our Institute!

Doctor's Degree Dr. rer. silv. - Astor Torano Caicoya

03 May 2016 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Astor Torano Caicoya successfully defended his PhD thesis entitled "Allometric Estimation of Aboveground Forest Biomass using Forest Structure Parameters estimated by means of Multi-Baseline SAR Measurements" at the Chair of Forest Growth and Yield Science of the Technical University Munich (TUM) already on Friday, 29 April 2016. In his thesis he addressed the estimation of forest biomass using allometric techniques based on forest structure parameters estimated by SAR. Astor performed his presentation as well as the questions round in a very convincing and settled way. We would like to congratulate Astor for his well deserved achievement, thank him for the time we spend together and wish him a successful future.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Michelangelo Villano

25 February 2016 - It is our pleasure to congratulate our colleague Michelangelo Villano for the successful defense of his PhD thesis at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The title of his thesis is “Staggered Synthetic Aperture Radar”. With a very clear and perfectly recited presentation, Michelangelo convinced the board of examiners about the quality of his thesis, which provides the basis for a new generation of synthetic aperture radars for high-resolution ultra-wide-swath SAR imaging like Tandem-L.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Björn Döring

24 February 2016 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Björn Döring successfully defended his thesis yesterday on February 23, 2016 at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The topic of his thesis is „Traceable Radiometric Calibration of Synthetic Aperture Radars”. He especially succeeded in laying foundations in the field of radar calibration in order to be able to advance into new classes of accuracy. On behalf of all colleagues we cordially congratulate him to this success.

Certified Systems Engineer - Mathias Weigt

19 January 2016 - We are glad to announce that our colleague Mathias Weigt has been granted the title "Certified Systems Engineer (Level C)". This certification presumes a University degree and up to four years of working experience in Systems Engineering. The title has been awarded by the Gesellschaft für Systems Engineering e.V. (GfSE), German Chapter of INCOSE. The certificate can, amongst other things, help to successfully acquire new projects.

19 January 2016 - We are glad to announce that our colleague Johannes Böer has been granted the title "Certified Systems Engineer (Level B)". This certification presumes a University degree and at least five years of working experience in Systems Engineering. The title has been awarded by the Gesellschaft für Systems Engineering e.V. (GfSE), German Chapter of INCOSE. The certificate can, amongst other things, help to successfully acquire new projects.

Project Management Professional - Daniel Schulze

19 January 2016 - We are glad to announce that our colleague Daniel Schulze has been granted the title "Project Management Professional". This certification presumes multiple years of working experience in project management. The title has been awarded by the Project Management Institute which is the largest among three worldwide leading institutions that grant such certifications. The certificate can, amongst other things, help to successfully acquire new projects.

Doctor's Degree Dr. rer. silv. - Florian Kugler

25 January 2016 - We are very glad to announce that our colleague Florian Kugler successfully defended his thesis entitled "Pol-InSAR Forest Height Estimation at Different Frequencies: Opportunities and Limitations" at the Chair of Forest Growth and Yield Science of the Technical University Munich (TUM) already on 22 December 2015. Florian's work was essential in understanding and solving many problems and open issues on quantitative forest height estimation from several acquisition configurations and sensors. In a convincing discussion Florian mastered SAR and forestry questions with the same virtue. This was the last "Chapter" of PhD work that ended with a well deserved Doctor rer. silv. title ... and probably the best X-mas present ever! We would like to congratulate Florian to this achievement and wish him a very successful future.

Doctor's Degree Dr. sc. - Giuseppe Parella

26 November 2015 - We are very happy to inform you that Giuseppe Parrella successfully defended his PhD thesis "Characterization of Glacier Facies using SAR Polarimetry at Long Wavelengths" yesterday at the Institute of Environmental Engineering of the ETH Zurich. It was a challenging discussion that lasted almost two hours and gave Giuseppe the possibility to prove with bravery that he fully deserves his PhD title. Congratulations, Giuseppe!

Elevation to IEEE Fellow - Andreas Reigber

24 November 2015 - The IEEE Board of Directors, at its November 2015 meeting, has elevated Dr. Andreas Reigber to "IEEE Fellow", the highest grade of membership in the IEEE. This prestigious honour has been awarded to him with the citation: "for contributions to SAR tomography and airborne multi-band SAR" and recognises his distinguished achievements in this area.

Elected Member of GRSS AdCom 2016-2018 and Vice-President of Technical Activities – Irena Hajnsek

11 November 2015 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Prof. Dr. rer. nat Irena Hajnsek has again been elected for being a member in the Administrative Committee (AdCom) of the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (GRSS), this time for the period of 2016 - 2018. Additionally, she will be the "Vice-President of Technical Activities“. Prof. Hajnsek is IEEE Fellow and in the last three years she had the lead within the IEEE GRSS Advisory Committee for conferences and symposia.

"Otto Lilienthal" Sabbatical 2015 - Paco López-Dekker

01. Juli 2015 - We are very glad to announce that our collegue Dr. Francisco (Paco) López-Dekker has been awarded the "Otto Lilienthal" Sabbatical 2015 from the Society of Friends of the German Aerospace Center (GvF). The Awards presentation will take place during a scientific colloquium at DLR in Cologne on October 27, 2015. Paco will start his sabbatical next year at IFREMER (Institut Français de Recherche pour l'Exploitation de la MER), Laboratoire d'Océanographie Spatiale near Brest, France. All the best!

ISO 9001 certificate awarded to HR Institute

28 April 2015 - Yesterday, on April 27, 2015, an external audit took place at our Institute with the aim of obtaining an ISO 9001 (Quality Management) certificate. And, yes, the external auditor recommended that we will receive the ISO 9001 certificate. We would like to thank all colleagues who contributed to this success.

23 April 2015 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Jun Su Kim won the Culmann Prize from the Department of Civil, Environmental and Geomatic Engineering, ETH Zurich, for his doctoral thesis "Development of Ionosphere Estimation Techniques for the Correction of SAR Data."

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Mariantonietta Zonno

23 March 2015 - Dear all, we are happy to annoumce that Mariantonietta Zonno is now (approx. two weeks ago) Dr. Mariantonietta Zonno. Mariantonietta did her Ph.D. at the Politecnico de Bari. The title of her thesis is “SAR Images Processing: Advancements in GB-SAR Data Focusing and InSAR Applications”. This research includes her work with Francesco De Zan on the lack of phase consistency in interferometric stacks (triplets) during her stay as a visiting scientist at our Institute last year. Presently, she is working on performance models for all kinds of applications. Congratulations, Mariantonietta!

März 2015 - We are very glad to announce that some colleagues have just returned from the German Microwave Conference (GeMIC) 2015 in Nuremburg - with good news: Their paper „Absolute Radiometric Calibration oft he Novel DLR 'Kalibri' Transponder“, authors Daniel Rudolf, Sebastian Raab, Björn Döring, Matthias Jirousek, Jens Reimann and Marco Schwerdt received the GeMIC Best Poster Award 2015. "DLR Science Award" in recognition of scientific achievements - Thomas Jagdhuber

10 December 2014 - We are happy to announce that our colleague Dr. Thomas Jagdhuber has been awarded with the DLR Science Award (DLR-Wissenschaftspreis). The award has been presented to him during the DLR General Assembly Meeting, beginning of December in Bremen. The Prize is awarded every year primarily to young scientists at DLR in honor of their outstanding scientific achievements which must be documented in refereed scientific journals. The awarded work of Thomas Jagdhuber is entitled: “Soil Moisture Estimation Under Low Vegetation Cover Using a Multi-Angular Polarimetric Decomposition”, published in IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Vol. 51, No. 4, April 2013. DLR Recognition as Center of Excellence in “Spaceborne Radar Remote Sensing”

20 October 2014 - The DLR executive board recently awarded the Microwaves and Radar Institute (HR) together with IMF and DFD the title “DLR Center of Excellence” concerning “Spaceborne Radar Remote Sensing”. This recognizes our world-wide acknowledged end-to-end system expertise in radar remote sensing, starting from conception and specification of new SAR sensors and missions, with development of new technologies and algorithms up to data processing and application of data products in earth science and safety responsibilities. The Microwaves and Radar Institute (HR) is carrying this title together with IMF and DFD from 2001. It has now been extended until end of 2015.

Asto Aerospace Promotion Prize 2014 - Anton Heistser

06 October 2014 - We are very glad to announce that our colleague Anton Heistser, Microwaves and Radar Institute, has been awarded the Asto Aerospace Promotion prize 2014 by the DLR friends association "Gesellschaft von Freunden des DLR" in order to support his dissertation. Congratulations, Anton!

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Esteban Aguilera

29 September 2014 - On Friday last week, our former colleague Esteban Aguilera came to TU Berlin in order to defend his doctoral thesis entitled "Synthetic Aperture Radar Tomography - Compressed Sensing Models and Algorithms”. After a very professional presentation and more than one hour of answering questions, the promotion committee decided to award him a Doctorate with "summa cum laude". On behalf of all DLR colleagues, we would like to congratulate him to this success! Esteban now works for Hansje Brinker, a company in the Netherlands, performing PSI deformation analysis.

2014 IEEE Distinguished Achievement Award - Alberto Moreira

20 August 2014 - We are very happy to announce that our colleague Prof. Dr. Alberto Moreira, Director of the Microwaves and Radar Institute, received the „2014 IEEE Distinguished Achievement Award“ during the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposiums (IGARSS), Plenary Session in Quebec. This award recognizes his distinguished achievements in the field of radar remote sensing. It belongs to the highest honors awarded by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society.

29 July 2014 - We are happy to announce that our colleagues Benjamin Bräutigam and Stefan Baumgartner successfully defended their doctoral theses yesterday at the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Communication Technology, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). 7 May 2014 - Martin Maier has been assigned to Quality Manager of the Institute by Britta Schade, Quality Manager of DLR, and Alberto Moreira, Institute Director of HR. Martin Maier is following Karl-Heinz Bethke on its post of Quality Manager of the Institute who introduced a quality management system at HR. Martin Maier has now constructed the quality management at HR in a way such that we will be able to approach the DLR intern quality audit according to ISO 9001 by the and of July 2014.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Sigurd Huber

26 February 2014 - We are very glad to announce that our colleague Sigurd Huber defended his PhD yesterday at the faculty of Electrical Engineering of Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) with great success. His clearly structured and professional presentation not only inspired his peers but also all present colleagues. The title of his dissertation is "Spaceborne SAR Systems with Digital Beamforming and Reflector Antennas". Sigurd Huber works in Marwan Younis' group and developed and optimized a promising novel SAR concept that combines the advantages of large reflector antennas (narrow antenna beam/high gain) and digital phased arrays (high flexibility while forming antenna diagrams via digital beamforming). An important contribution of his work is the development of optimized techniques for the combination of feed signals in real-time. On one hand, by using these new techniques the gain of received echoes can be maximized and on the other hand the contribution of ambiguities can be minimized. Another substantial contribution is the development of a reflector with two different focal levels which simultaneously distributes the power of an incoming plane wave to several feed elements. This leads in combination with the digital signal processing to a balanced performance for different incidence angles on the one hand and to a significant reduction of possible performance losses after fail of a feed element on the other hand. Sigurd's developments, hence, will play a critical role during the development of a high-performance SAR instrument for the Tandem-L mission. Dear Sigurd well done, congratulations!

He could convince his peers regarding his novel, fully electronic microwave imaging system. 06 December 2013 As last year, the final of this year's DLR_Science_Slam took place at the evening event of DLR's annual general assembly, held yesterday on 05 December 2013 in Göttingen and DLR colleagues could join the event via a live video broadcast. Elevation to IEEE Fellow - Irena Hajnsek and Kostas Papathanassiou

28 November 2013 - It is our great pleasure to announce that the IEEE Board of Directors, at its November 2013 meeting, elevated Irena Hajnsek and Kostas Papathanassiou to "IEEE Fellow", effective, 1 January 2014, with the following citations: „for contributions to synthetic aperture radar imaging using airborne sensors and spaceborne missions“ and „for contributions to polarimetric interferometry for synthetic aperture radar“, respectively. Within the next two months, they will receive their IEEE Fellow pin and certificate. Both serve as visible recognition of his elevation to the highest grade of membership in the IEEE. 29 July 2013 - Our colleague Octavio Ponce has been granted a Student Paper Award at the International Geoscience and Remote Sensing Symposium (IGARSS) in Melbourne, Australia, for his work entitled “First Demonstration of 3-D Holographic Tomography with Fully Polarimetric Multi-Circular SAR at L-band”. "DLR Science Award" in recognition of scientific achievements - Pau Prats

19 September 2012 - Pau Prats, head of the Multimodal Processing Group of the Institute, has been awarded with the DLR Science Award (DLR-Wissenschaftspreis). This Prize is awarded every year primarily to young scientists at DLR in honor of their outstanding scientific achievements which must be documented in refereed scientific journals. The awarded work of Pau Prats is entitled: “Processing of Sliding Spotlight and TOPS SAR Data Using Baseband Azimuth Scaling”, published in IEEE Transactions on Geoscience and Remote Sensing, Vol. 48, No. 2, February 2010. Congratulations to Pau Prats! The award will be presented during the DLR General Assembly Meeting, beginning of December in Cologne.

Certificate of Recognition of TanDEM-X Achievements and Impact to all the TanDEM-X Team

30 April 2012 - A satellite mission has been awarded for the first time during the EUSAR 2012 conference in Nuremburg, Germany: The TanDEM-X mission received a "Certificate of Recognition of TanDEM-X Achievements and Impact". A percentage of 30% of all EUSAR 2012 contributions referred to TanDEM-X and all TanDEM-X presentations have been presented excellently at the conference. The award was handed over to Dr. Manfred Zink who received it representing the whole TanDEM-X team at DLR and in the industry. Congratulations to all the TanDEM-X team!

ARGUS-Preis 2011 - Christopher Hepner

19 October 2011 - Mr. Christopher Hepner has been awarded this year's ARGUS-Preis granted by EADS-Cassidian. His master's thesis "Preparation of 3-D Radar Signatures from Tower Turntable Measurements with Sparse Aperture" done in Research Group Microwave Sensors was sucessfully defended at Prof. Münzner, Hochschule Ulm. The Award will be presented to him on 20 October 2011. For this, he will give a talk at EADS Ulm. We congratulate Christopher to this success and would like to thank him again for this extraordinary work.

DLR Research Semester - Josef Mittermayer

19 September 2011 - Recognizing his outstanding research achievements and for the promotion of further studies, Dr.-Ing. Josef Mittermayer, Microwaves and Radar Institute, has been grated a "DLR Research Semester" by the DLR Executive Board. The DLR Research Semester allows DLR scientists conducting their studies for one semester at a research institution abroad. Josef has been informed about this award decision in a personal letter already in May this year.

Sustainable Resource Management (SRM) Award - Astor Torano Caicoya

12 August 2011 - We are glad to announce that Astor Torano Caicoya received the Sustainable Resource Management (SRM) Award donated by the Audi Foundation for Environment "Audi Stiftung für Umwelt". The SRM Award has been issued by the Audi Foundation for Environment in 2010 for promoting great achievements in the field of sustainable resource management. It honours graduates in course Sustainable Resource Management of Technische Universität München (TUM) with great achievements. Astor finished his master thesis in the Pol-InSAR Group and is working towards his doctoral thesis since 2010 with the goal to derive innovative forest biomass algorithms based on the 3D forest structure and on Pol-InSAR techniques. Astor's work poses a bridge-building function between the complex nature and new technologies and is a basic contribution to the aimed Tandem-L mission goal. 05 August 2011 - Recognizing his outstanding research achievements and for the promotion of further studies, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Helmut Süß, Microwaves and Radar Institute, has been grated a "DLR Research Semester" by the DLR Executive Board - already in May last year. The DLR Research Semester allows DLR scientists conducting their studies for one semester at a research institution abroad. Professor Süß just returned from his DLR Research Semester now. He has been at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey, California, from April until July this year.

14 March 2011 - We are proud to announce that our PhD student Esteban Aguilera won the "Young Scientist Award" for his presentation last week at the URSI Symposium in Garmisch-Partenkirchen! 22 November 2010 - We are glad to announce that Thomas Oberwallner who worked for 3 years half-and-half here at DLR, Microwaves and Radar Institute, Department of Reconnaissance and Security, Group Signatures and also at the Dual Academy Baden-Württemberg (DHBW) in Mannheim, Germany, finished his Bachelor degree as Best in his course on 19 November 2010. He has been honored in front of an audience of 6000 attendees, also DLR as the education facility has been valued in this context.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Esra Erten

17 November 2010 - Yesterday, our former colleague Esra Erten defended her thesis entitled "Information theory of multi-temporal SAR systems with application to motion detection and change detection" at the Technische Universität Berlin with great success. Her work was supported by DAAD and took place half-and-half at TU Berlin and DLR Oberpfaffenhofen. Esra will further serve science and especially the SAR field: She will have a postdoc position at ETH Zurich, chair of Prof. Irena Hajnsek. We wish great success for the future and hope to see more thrilling scientific results from her.

"Phillip-Matthäus-Hahn-Stiftung" Award - Bastian Calaminus

02. November 2010 - We are glad to announce that our colleague Herr Bastian Calaminus, Group System Engineering, Department Reconnaissance and Security, finished his Master course in „Systems Engineering“ at the Gratuate School of Albstadt-Sigmaringen with certificate "Best of the Year". He has been granted thus with the "Phillip-Matthäus-Hahn-Stiftung" award. We congratulate him very much to this award and his very successfull Masters degree.

Best Paper Award - Matteo Nannini and Ralf Horn

We are glad to accounce that Matteo Nannini and Ralf Horn recently received the Best Paper Prize at the 7th Joint SEAS & EMRS DTC Technical Conference 2010 in Edinburgh. The title is: Nick Walker, Ralf Horn, Armando Marino, Matteo Nannini, Ian Woodhouse: "The SARTOM Project: Tomography and polarimetry for enhanced target detection for foliage penetrating airborne P-band and L-band SAR".

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Koichi Iribe

Since today, 19 August 2010, Koichi Iribe is Dr. Koichi Iribe. We are very happy to let you know that Koichi Iribe successfully defended his PhD thesis at the Tohoku University, in Sendai, Japan. Koichi spend two years in our institute working in the Pol-InSAR group on the Detection and Application of Coherent Scatterers. Since August 2009 he is back in Japan writing up his thesis on "Investigation on Coherent Scatterers in Natural Environment for SAR Multi-Image Applications" that finally defended with success today (19 August 2010). We congratulate and wish him all the best for his future.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. with "summa cum laude" - Jayanti J. Sharma

We are very happy to inform you that Jayanti J. Sharma successfully defended yesterday, 12 August 2010, her PhD with distinction at the Karlsruher Institut für Technologie (KIT), Fakultät for Elektrotechnik und Informationtechnik. She was working the last four years at the Pol-InSAR research group on the thesis entitled "Estimation of Glacier Ice Extinction Coefficient using Long-wavelength Polarimetric Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar". We like to congratulate her for this achievement and wish her a successful continuation of her research career.

First Place Student Award, EUSAR 2010 - Jayanti J. Sharma

We are glad to announce that Jayanti J. Sharma was awarded the „Best Student Paper Award“ at EUSAR 2010. The award certificate reads as "First Place Student Award" to Jayanti J. Best Master Degree Thesis Prize, 2010 IEEE Gold Remote Sensing Conference - Anna Fontana

We are very happy to inform you that Anna Fontana was awarded with the prize for the best Master Degree thesis on remote sensing topics discussed in Italy in 2009 during the IEEE GOLD Remote Sensing Conference, held 29/30 April 2010 in Livorno, Italy. This is a national prize awarded every year by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing South Italy Chapter. Anna performed her master thesis on forest structure estimation in our institute within the PolInSAR group in 2009 and defended the thesis successful in December 2009 at the University of Napoli. She was supervised by Seung-Kuk Lee and Kostas Papathanassiou.

Doctor's Degree Dr.-Ing. - Alberto Di Maria

28 April 2010 - We are very glad to announce that our colleague Alberto Di Maria defended his thesis today on 28 April 2010 at the University of Siena, Italy, Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione (Information Engineering department). His work is entitled "Fast Numerical Techniques for the Design of Planar and Quasiplanar Arrays". We congratulate him very much to this milestone in his career.

04 June 2009 - Dr. Irena Hajnsek, Microwaves and Radar Institute, has been appointed Professor at the Eidgenoessische Technische Hochschule (ETH) Zurich in Zurich, Switzerland, in Department Environmental Engineering, Building and Geomatics. There, she will fill in the professorship of Remote Sensing from November 2009.
