The Institute of Future Fuels particularly supports the structural change in the Rhenish lignite mining region in the course of the coal phase-out. Building on its scientific work, it aims to use the energy expertise in the region to help develop ideas in companies and offer industrial companies optimum support. Collaboration with research partners and companies is therefore of particular importance in order to achieve more for the region together.

The institute also pursues the goal of conducting joint research with German, European and global partners. The common vision: to accelerate the availability of renewable fuels.

The institute operates large-scale facilities and laboratories that can also be used by external research partners. The aim is to provide targeted support for industry developments and to test and qualify components.

Cooperations

SolarPACES

The network coordinates international research for solar thermal power generation and solar chemical technologies and promotes exchange with industry experts. 19 countries from all continents are represented in the SolarPACES network by their leading research institutions for concentrating solar technologies. DLR is one of the founding members of the SolarPACES network.

Women+ in Concentrated Solar

Women+ in Concentrated Solar is a group of international researchers and professionals dedicated to supporting and promoting underrepresented genders in concentrated solar technologies. Underrepresented genders include cis women, trans women, trans men, non-binary people, and people who may be questioning their gender. The group works in various fields and at different career levels, passionate about sharing its knowledge and expertise in concentrated solar technologies.

The RWTH Aachen University is the second largest university for technical degree programmes in Germany in terms of student numbers. The chair of solar fuel production is held by Prof Dr rer. nat. Christian Sattler.

TUD Dresden University of Technology

The TUD Dresden University of Technology is one of the largest technical universities in Germany. The chair of solar fuel production is a joint appointment of the Technische Universität Dresden and the German Aerospace Center (DLR). The holder is Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Christian Sattler.

European Solar Thermal Electricity Association

The European Solar Thermal Electricity Association represents the interests of European industrial companies and research organisations in the field of solar thermal electricity generation since 2007. The aim of the association is to support the growing European solar thermal electricity industry for the production of green electricity in Europe and abroad, especially in the Mediterranean region.

FVEE - ForschungsVerbund Erneuerbare Energien

Renewable Energy Research Association

The ForschungsVerbund Erneuerbare Energien (FVEE) is a nationwide cooperation of research institutes. Its members research and develop technologies for renewable energies, energy efficiency, energy storage and the optimised technical and socio-economic interaction of all components of the system.

BSW

German Solar Association

The German Solar Association uses policy advice to influence the creation of suitable political framework conditions for continuous market growth in solar energy. This includes regular media coverage, arranging business cooperation, opening up and developing export markets and working on standardisation issues. The BSW brings together experts in various specialised groups and moderates target-oriented work on the most important fields of photovoltaics, solar thermal energy and storage.

Hydrogen Europe Research

Hydrogen Europe Research is the research grouping of the Fuel Cells and Hydrogen Joint Undertaking, a unique public private partnership supporting research, technological development and demonstration (RTD) activities in fuel cell and hydrogen energy technologies in Europe. Gathering 83 research institutions (universities and research centres), we support and promote research interests in the FCH JU and create a framework for cooperation of science and industry in Europe.

EERA

European Energy Research Alliance

The European Energy Research Alliance (EERA) is a membership-based, non-profit association, constituting the largest low-carbon energy research community in Europe and a key player in the European Union's Strategic Energy Technology (SET) Plan. It was established in 2008 by leading research institutes to expand and optimise EU energy research capabilities. Today it brings together more than 250 organisations from 30 countries.

Research infrastructure

The Institute of Future Fuels operates several large-scale research facilities at various DLR locations for its research projects. These include the High-flux Solar Furnace in Cologne-Porz, the Synlight solar simulator - the world's largest artificial sun - and specialised laboratories for researching state-of-the-art heat transfer media.
