Research team receives ASME Outstanding Paper Award

A research team from the Institute of Future Fuels receives this year's Outstanding Paper Award from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME)

This year's "Outstanding Paper Award" from the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) goes to a research team from our institute. This was announced during the 18th International Conference on Energy Sustainability in Anaheim, USA. The award aims to promote high quality research in the field of energy sustainability recognising papers for their originality, impact, clarity and elegance.

Title of the paper:

"Experimental Study of a Lab Scale Carbonator for CO2 Capture Purpose"

Abstract Overview: In order to achieve Net Zero Emissions by 2050, a reduction of 4 % of CO2 emissions is needed by 2030 on the cement sector. On the other hand, the demand of cement is projected to increase by 12-23 % by 2050. To overcome this dilemma, the integration of Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) and Calcium Looping (CaL) is a promising and sustainable alternative. In this study, the focus is on the carbonation step of the CaL process. The papers introduces a lab scale carbonator for CO2 capture with CaO particles, as part of results of the previous CALyPSOL project. CO2 capture efficiencies ranged between 64 and 82 %, showing the feasibility of the reactor designed.
