The German Aerospace Center (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) is one of the leading research organisations in Europe. This is associated with the highest demands on the quality of our scientific results and technological developments, including the underlying processes. At the same time, DLR is committed to making sustainability an integral part not only of the minds of the people at DLR, but also of its processes and activities. In doing so, it relies on an integrated and company-wide management system.

In line with its decentralised structure, DLR also follows the principle of subsidiarity in the organisation of its management system: "As centralised as necessary, as decentralised as possible".

The aim is to optimally map the different contexts of the institutes and facilities, such as interested parties/stakeholders, areas of responsibility, processes, opportunities and/or risks, in addition to the responsibilities in the institutes and facilities.

Different management system areas can be centralised to varying degrees. While the implementation of quality management is the responsibility of the respective institutes and facilities, environmental management and energy management, for example, are organised centrally at DLR.
