CFD-software for incompressible flows

THETA

The DLR-THETA-Code (THETA=Turbulent Heat Release Extension of the TAU-Code) was developed for the simulation of incompressible combustion chamber flows. While sharing some data-structures and pre- and postprocessing functionalities with the TAU-Code, it uses efficient solution algorithms tailored for incompressible flows. Further areas of application include two-phase flow using the Volume-of-Fluid method, which is used to simulate fuel sloshing in tanks of upper stages of rockets, as well as the high-fidelity simulation of flows around wind turbines and in the surrounding terrain considering important atmospheric parameters such as thermal stratification.

Key features

  • finite volume discretization
  • unstructured grids
  • projection method / SIMPLE
  • fast linear multi-grid method
  • turbulence models: SA, SST, RSM
  • scale resolving methods: LES, HRLM

Areas of application

THETA can be used for the simulation of a broad spectrum of incompressible flows. This includes wind energy applications (e.g. turbine and atmospheric boundary layer), flows in combustion chambers, passenger cabin flows, or performance analysis of fans.
