COANDA - Virtual product with numerical simulation

Result of a CFD flow simulation of the DLR research aircraft I-Star. Illustration of the pressure coefficient distribution on the aircraft surface and surface stream traces at the right wing.

Numerical simulation is a key technology for design and complete digital description of aircraft. Thus, providing tools for multidisciplinary simulations is an essential step towards the virtual product. In such a set of tools, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) plays a central role. Therefore, DLR is developing the CFD software by ONERA, DLR and Airbus (CODA) in a European collaboration with the referred partners. The project COANDA comprises a major part of DLR’s development activities for CODA and aims for providing a sustainable, extensively validated and verified, robust CFD functionality for automated application in multidisciplinary analysis and optimization (MDA/O) with efficient utilization of today’s and future HPC hardware. The aim is to strengthen numerical flow simulation as one of the core competencies of DLR aeronautics research and to establish CODA as a national and European CFD platform for aerospace research and the aerospace industry.

In addition to project management, the DLR Institute of Aerodynamics and Flow Technology is responsible for a wide range of activities in the field of algorithmic development and the implementation of an automated validation and verification process.
