Research infrastructure

The institute operates various research facilities for fundamental and application-oriented experiments in wind tunnels as well as for ground and flight tests.

Non-rotating annular cascade test facility Göttingen

The non-rotating annular cascade test facility Göttingen is used to research the aeroelasticity of turbomachinery blades.The interaction of transient aerodynamics with structural dynamics is investigated by forced excitation of the blades in so-called ring grids. The measurement data serve to improve the physical understanding of current and future aeroelastic issues and the reliability of numerical methods.

High pressure wind tunnel Göttingen (HDG)

The High Pressure Wind Tunnel Göttingen (HDG) is a continuously operated, pressurized wind tunnel with a closed test section of 0.6 x 0.6 x 1 m³ in size. It is a facility especially for the experimental simulation of flows with very high Reynolds numbers. To achieve these Reynolds numbers, the entire wind tunnel can be pressurized up to 100 bar. This allows realistic Reynolds numbers to be achieved for very large structures such as aircraft, vehicles, wind turbines or buildings.

Multi axis vibration simulator (MAVIS)

Components in measuring equipment and devices, components of general mechanical engineering or structures in aerospace are often exposed to strong dynamic loads during their use. In order to avoid damage or undesirable vibration problems during operation or transportation, the vibration behavior must be examined or at least estimated during the development phase.

Mobile ground and flight vibration testing system (SSVA)

At the SSVA researchers are investigating the structural dynamic behaviour of aircraft, rotorcraft and wind turbines by means of vibration testing.

System to measure unsteady signals (AMIS III)

For the collection and analysis of large amounts of data in steady and unsteady wind-tunnel and flight tests, DLR uses the AMIS III, a system for data acquisition and experimental control with the very high number of 960 analog and 162 digital input channels.

CARO

The large-scale research facility 'Computer for Advanced Research in Aerospace' (CARO) is used to carry out numerical simulations. When questions of design and optimisation are transferred into mathematical equations, high-performance computing is required to approach possible solutions.

Measurement technology and test rigs for wind tunnels

The institute has a number of setups that permit experimental wind tunnel analysis of various model configurations with different motion forms to meet the needs of various issues within the field of aeroelasticity.
