EU Green Week: DLR emphasises the importance of satellite-based solar radiation data

Weather models and satellite observations are processed into precise solar radiation data at DLR. The Institute of Networked Energy Systems has a high-performance server infrastructure available for this purpose.
  • One thematic focus of this year's EU Green Week from 30 May to 5 June 2022 was on precise solar radiation data generated from weather models and satellite observations.
  • Project planners, investors, electricity grid operators and citizens in particular benefit from better spatial resolution information.
  • The EU launched the event series to bring European environmental policy together with political decision-makers, leading environmentalists and stakeholders from all over Europe
  • Fokus: Energy, energy meteorology, knowledge transfer

The need for accurate solar radiation data, generated from weather models and satellite observations, will continuously increase as a result of the growing use of renewable energy. This was emphasized by Dr Marion Schroedter-Homscheidt, head of the Energy Meteorology Research Group at the Institute for Networked Energy Systems, during this year's EU Green Week from May 30 to June 5, 2022. In particular, project planners, investors, power grid operators and citizens would also benefit from spatially better-resolved information in view of the growing number of decentralized plants for the generation of renewable energies. Corresponding data would be provided in the future by the Meteosat Third Generation satellite system.

Schroedter-Homscheidt had participated in a moderated Twitter Space audio discussion as part of EU Green Week, at the invitation of the European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF), together with experts from the institutional EU level, academic specialists and stakeholders from the private sector. The focus was on aspects of data use by the Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) and the EU Copernicus Climate Change Service (C3S). Questions from Internet users during the live event, which lasted about an hour, included examples of applications for energy companies or consulting firms in the planning and management of energy infrastructures and services.

With Green Week, the European Union has launched a series of events to bring together European environmental policy makers, environmental leaders and stakeholders from across Europe. This year's edition focused on "The European Green Deal - the EU's sustainable and transformative growth strategy for a resource-efficient and climate-neutral Europe by 2050." Throughout the week, numerous partner events took place in Europe.
