Research at the Institute

Several research groups are assigned to the individual departments at the institute. Within the group, the scientists work in depth on the research topics of batteries, fuel cells, electrolysers and heat storage. They generate new findings, test hypotheses and drive innovation. In addition to experimental studies, they analyse data, develop models, design prototypes and publish their findings in scientific journals. You will find our colleagues at numerous scientific conferences. Our research groups play a decisive role in the further development of new technologies or solutions for current challenges in the field of energy storage and utilisation.

Research Area Batteries

In this area, experimental work is being carried out at material and cell level to improve the understanding of complex processes in battery cells and to optimise their performance, durability and safety. This knowledge is used to develop new cell technologies that offer advantages in terms of cost, material availability and energy density.

Research Area Fuel Cells

Fuel cells are environmentally friendly and efficient energy converters that enable sustainable energy storage by utilising hydrogen. However, their service life is limited under extreme conditions such as high temperatures and low humidity - a problem that we are tackling with targeted research. We are working on optimising their stability, production processes, environmental compatibility, recyclability and costs.

Research Area Electrolysers

Developing efficient technologies for the production, transport and use of renewable hydrogen in order to drive forward the decarbonisation of sectors that are difficult to convert - this is the focus of the Electrolysers research field. Electrochemical reactors and electrolysers play a key role in providing green hydrogen for industry and emission-free energy generation.

Research Area Heat Storage

Research focuses on the development of innovative storage technologies and systems for high temperatures and liquids in order to promote decarbonisation. Efficient materials and concepts for thermal energy storage and conversion in various temperature ranges as well as integration into real applications are being investigated.
