Used intelligently and linked with new mobility and vehicle concepts, automation can make a decisive contribution to solving the challenges facing the transport system. However, in order to develop an automated transport system, vehicles must be able to interact with each other and with related infrastructures quickly and reliably.

The main objective of the German Aerospace Center's (Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt; DLR) cross-sectoral Transport 5.0 project is conducting research into and the development of safe, adaptive and cooperative automation for road and rail transport, as well as shipping and aviation. A central goal is the development of cross-domain, self-organising cooperation schemes and organisational principles for a user-centred transport system.

The project is intended to deliver increased cross-domain exchange, a common understanding and the associated identification of new research topics and possible applications. In addition, an overall Transport 5.0 system will be examined, to develop general organisational principles and identify first instances of cross-domain use. These will be presented in concepts, simulations or as real-life demonstrations, depending on their feasibility.

In­tel­li­gent mo­bil­i­ty

In future, transport will be automated, networked and electrically powered. Urbanisation is continuing, and cities are becoming smart. Road users will move within a common traffic area, whether their vehicles are automated or manually controlled, and regardless of whether they are travelling by road or rail, in the air or on water. The transport system must be safe, robust and efficient, no matter what the situation.

Trans­port Sys­tem

Mobility is a central feature of developed societies. The transportation of people and goods not only generates social participation and added value but also causes negative effects that need to be minimised. For this reason, DLR is researching the interrelationships between the development of transport and its impact in their different dimensions. This includes the analysis of user preferences and behaviour, the development of transport supply and demand, and the environmental impact of noise emissions, greenhouse gases and air pollutants.
