The analogue lunar simulation facility LUNA will be operated in cooperation with the European Space Agency (ESA) at the DLR site in Cologne. The construction and equipping of the facility is scheduled for 2023/2024.
The LUNA plant has a 700 square metre regolith area and includes a deep floor area, a dust chamber, an airlock, a gas laboratory, a separate workshop and several preparation and storage rooms.
In this way, LUNA enables the development and testing of new tools and devices, as well as the simulation of new operating concepts in an analogue lunar environment, and will thus support future manned lunar missions in their preparation.
