Application Center MRO

The Application Center MRO is a unique facility for the practical research of MRO technologies and processes. Current research topics are investigated, demonstrated and further developed in close co-operation with partners from science and industry. The Application Center MRO is undergoing extensive expansion. More about the new facilities

Design / Concept

The Application Center MRO serves as a research and development platform for new technologies to implement innovative maintenance-related digitalisation and automation processes. Current research topics are demonstrated, evaluated and developed in close collaboration with partners in the business and scientific sectors. The most prominent technologies from the fields of robotics, 3D measurement, augmented and virtual reality, position tracking as well as drone and inspection technologies form the Application Center’s key components.

Main research topics

  • New maintenance approaches
  • Human system integration
  • MRO technologies and inspection

Services

  • Providing a unique research environment to partners
  • Cooperating with partners from the industrial and scientific sectors
  • Implementing future digitalisation and automation processes in maintenance

New Facilities

In July 2024, the Institute of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul moved to new premises. These expand the possibilities for practical research into aircraft maintenance. The Application Center MRO now covers four laboratory areas and a hall area totalling approx. 660 m². It will be extensively expanded in the coming months.

A decommissioned aircraft, known as the MRO Living Lab, for the first time will make it possible to test new approaches in a realistic environment. Research will be conducted into how individual players interact with each other with digital support and how new technologies and instruments for process optimisation prove themselves in practical use. New test rigs will help with the development of methods for early damage detection and prediction.

MRO Living Lab
A business jet that is no longer airworthy will create a realistic environment for research into MRO technologies and processes.
Project Lab
The Project Lab offers test cells for various projects including an electronics workshop, a robotics area, drone systems and a mobile laser tracking system.
Vision Lab
Technologies from the fields of tracking, virtual and augmented reality and visualisation for research of individual process steps as well as entire process chains involving humans.
Mechanics Hub
Facility for the construction, production, assembly and maintenance of test setups and devices. Includes an assembly area, 3D printing and a materials warehouse.
Measurement Lab
The measurement laboratory is intended to be available for preparing and carrying out measurements that require a quiet environment. Among other things, it contains modular measurement technology and an area for sensor application.
