Product Lifecycle Management
The Product Lifecycle Management Department is dedicated to modelling, simulating and optimising products and their maintenance throughout their entire lifecycles.
»We maintain Mobility for a Sustainable Future.«
Based in Hamburg Finkenwerder, the Institute of Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul conducts research in the fields of maintenance process optimisation and automatisation, exploring innovative diagnostics, maintenance and modification technologies for aerospace systems. Further aspects include evaluating the sustainability impact of these alterations on aircraft lifecycles. The institute’s vision is to maximise operational efficiency for a range of products such as aircraft, wind turbines and rail vehicles, taking entire product lifecycles into consideration.
This is realised by effectively combining health and condition monitoring with predictive and demand-oriented maintenance. Developing a digital product twin enables a bi-directional link between the real and virtual worlds to be created to make optimum use of the data and information collected in operations and maintenance. Evaluating the digital twin over the course of its operating life enables advantageous insights into MRO challenges to be gained. These can be utilised by MRO service providers to develop new business models, for instance. Furthermore, consolidating the lifecycle model analysis with information generated by the digital twin enables operational, maintenance, overhaul and repair strategies to be both developed and optimised.
Working in close collaboration with partners from the scientific and industrial sectors, the Application Center MRO provides the means for these research topics to be developed, demonstrated and evaluated in the practical sense.
We cooperate closely with the Innovation Center for Small Aircraft Technologies in Aachen which combines the expertise of various DLR institutes.
As pioneers, we explore key technologies for the maintenance of tomorrow. We strive to develop innovative comprehensive solutions, using our extensive system understanding of MRO operations – be it a single component or an entire product lifecycle. Driven by the enthusiasm and excellence of our scientists, we combine disruptive ideas and applied research to strengthen the ties between business and science.
