Dr Jens Hauslage holds workshop on gravitational biology at La Trobe University in Melbourne
- 3rd Annual Gravitational Biology Workshop at La Trobe University in Melbourne
- Methods for simulating weightlessness and conducting experiments in the field of life science gravity research
For the third time now, Dr Jens Hauslage, Department of Applied Aerospace Biology at the DLR Institute of Aerospace Medicine, is at La Trobe University in Melbourne, Australia, to hold a three-day workshop on gravitational biology. The participants travelled to Melbourne from all over Australia.
The workshop will teach methods for simulating weightlessness and conducting experiments in the field of life science gravity research. For example, clinostats and centrifuges will be presented as technical methods for changing the perception of gravity in organisms. There are both lectures and practical applications in the laboratory in which, for example, the microscopy of specialised gravity-perceiving plant cells is carried out. The topic of "open source technologies" will also be addressed in order to show young researchers the possibilities of setting up experiments with simple and particularly inexpensive modules. At the same time, clinostats are 3D printed and constructed to carry out simple experiments for training students.
The workshop will be followed by the 3rd Melbourne Space Symposium, at which Prof Thomas Voigtmann from the DLR Institute of Materials Physics in Space and Dr Jens Hauslage will give presentations. Among other things, they will discuss the expansion of cooperation between DLR and Australia with regard to sounding rocket campaigns.
