ISLAND

Intelligent Suite for Local and Network Demand and capacity balance

Laufzeit: 1.June.2023 - 31.May.2026

ISLAND project is following the line of research which started in 2016 as 2 projects of: PJ08 the follow up previous SESAR project of “PJ08: Advanced Airspace Management” and “PJ09 Advanced Demand Capacity Balancing”.

Both projects were in search of improvements on tactical air traffic flow management and were focused on topics such as Dynamic Airspace Configurations (DAC), Dynamic Mobile Areas (DMA) on one hand, and Network impact assessment, DCB measure reconciliation, Network state and resilience on the other hand.

In SESAR Wave 2 (2020-2022), these projects were integrated into “PJ.09 W2 Digital Network Management Services” with 5 solutions:

  • Sol. 44 Dynamic Airspace Configurations (DAC)
  • Sol. 45 Enhanced Network Traffic Prediction and shared complexity representation
  • Sol. 47 Network optimization of multiple ATFCM time-based measures
  • Sol. 48 Digital Integrated Network Management and ATC Planning (INAP)
  • Sol. 49 Collaborative Network Performance Management

ISLAND project has 2 main solutions of Digital Capacity (Sol. A) and Virtual Centre (Sol. B). DLR in general contributes to Sol. A that integrates the previous results and works on key concepts such as advanced DCB, digital INAP assistance, traffic demand, network states and network impact assessment.

More specifically, DLR aims to advance network state definition that enhances tactical situational awareness. In parallel to network state topic, DLR’s previous contribution in advancing resilience from safety to performance variability in PJ09, will be continued to define more mature resilience indicators at network level.
