Illustration of the lunar region where SOFIA detected water molecules
The illustration shows the location of Clavius crater on the moon. There, the flying observatory SOFIA was able to clearly detect water molecules outside the permanent shadow at the lunar poles for the first time. The detail shows those water molecules that are bound in the surface substrate.
