The aim of the ADM Aeolus Mission is to not only improve our understanding of dynamic processes in the atmosphere, but also medium to long-term weather forecasting and climate observation. The Earth observation satellite is carrying the first wind lidar, capable of measuring wind, aerosol and cloud profiles up to an altitude of 30 kilometres. The innovative laser system sends short, powerful pulses into the atmosphere in the UV spectrum. The telescope collects the reflected light and the receiver analyses the data in near-real time, according to its speed and wind direction.
