A ferry leaves the Rostock harbour
In the R-Mode Baltic project, which started in October 2017, experts under the guidance of DLR are developing a ground-based maritime positioning system as an alternative to global navigation satellite systems, should these ever have a glitch or even a complete failure. The goal is to demonstrate the technological feasibility by setting up an R-mode test field. In doing this, navigating into the harbour of Rostock or any other port will become more secure in critical situations in the long term.
