The image shows a crater approximately 18 kilometres across that was filled by sediments up to the level of its immediate surroundings. Over time, its once protruding rim was eroded – its existence is only traceable today by the circular outline of the sedimentary plateau. Outflowing underground water left voids, so that the immediate crater surroundings partly collapsed in on themselves, giving rise to ‘chaotic terrain’. In the foreground, a number of small terraces and streamlined islands can be seen, which were formed by the evidently powerful outflowing water.
