A real-world laboratory is being set up in the mobility region of Braunschweig-Wolfsburg as part of the "5G-Reallabor" research project led by the Institute of Transportation Systems at the DLR. The 5G real-world laboratory serves the rapid implementation of use cases on a concentrated area in order to gain experience about the 5G technology, but also the interaction with other technologies across domain boundaries.
Research is being conducted to determine how 5G technology can be used in urban areas in parallel with the expansion of the 5G network and in a way that complements other communication technologies. A broad trial of 5G technology in various fields of application is expected to yield insights into various practice-oriented research questions and to generate impulses in the project region and beyond. The concrete use cases are to be located in the areas of mobility, eHealth, smart construction and smart city services. A total of 12 subprojects are working on research questions, including "Optimized rescue mobility with infrastructure support", "Rescue drone" and "Train control and influence".
The Institute of Flight Guidance is in charge of the rescue drone application. The aim is to improve the information situation at emergency scenes even before the first rescue services arrive. To this end, drones are to be used which, in an emergency, will be sent to the scene by the fire department's operations control center. This saves time and optimizes processes at the scene of the emergency, as the right resources can be called up and, if necessary, information can be provided about suitable access routes. After the situation on site has been assessed, a digital exclusion zone is set up to provide room for action for emergency forces, a landing zone for rescue helicopters if required, and safety for those affected. This exclusion zone can be transmitted via appropriate (U-space) services over the 5G service layer as well as directly from the drone to vehicles in the vicinity of the accident site.
The Institute will collaborate in the 5G area with mobile network operators in their live networks. Additional 5G technology building blocks such as mobile edge cloud servers will also be available for low latency applications. Likewise, the Braunschweig Fire Department has been subcontracted with the aim of linking and testing the developed systems with existing real fire department systems.
