BBK and ZKI workshop with DRK, BRK, THW Bavaria, and Fire Academy Geretsried

In January 2019 extreme snow falls in the whole Alpine foothills led to the declaration state of emergency in five Bavarian districts. On request of the federal office for civil protection and disaster relief the DLR supported through the ZKI-DE service with satellite-based map information about the situation of the snow coverage.

On May, 9th the ZKI organized together with colleagues from the federal office for civil protection and disaster relief (BBK) and the Federal Agency for Cartography and Geodesy (BKG), which should be qualified to offer the operational tasks of the ZKI-DE Service from 2021 ongoing, the workshop “Remote Sensing for major damage events”.

The workshop gave the opportunity to discuss the former activation and talk about service improvements and additional service elements. The participants from The German Red Cross (DRK), the Bavarian Red Cross (BRK), the Federal Agency for Technical Relief (THW), and the Fire Academy Geretsried reported their experiences and got an insight in the potentials of remote sensing and the map production process. After the presentations and the discussion the participants visited the German Space Operations Center (GSOC).
