Anniversary of German Unification 2019 in Kiel - ZKI supports with remote sensing products

Together with the DLR Institute for Optical Sensor Systems, the Centre for Satellite Based Crisis Information supported the work of the Federal Police and the State Police on German Unification Day. Various remote sensing products were generated and provided to the security authorities.

Using up-to-date high-resolution satellite data, the railway lines between Kiel and cities in the vicinity of Kiel were displayed. In addition, a 3D model of Kiel's city centre and a 2D model of Kiel's ferry port were created using aerial photographs. The aerial camera system MACS (Modular Aerial Camera System) was used, which in this case was installed in a research aircraft of Free University Berlin. The 3D model enables the police services to orient themselves in space prior to an event in order to plan emergency forces and their locations sensibly. Furthermore, possible scenarios can be discussed and trained realistically. Moreover, this geo-information provides the emergency forces at headquarters with a better understanding of their environment and where their colleagues are on the site on the day of the event.
