The new ICE high-speed line between Munich and Berlin was officially opened on 8 December 2017 with two special trains. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) supported the Federal Police in securing the event. Scientists from the Institute for Optical Sensor Systems in Berlin recorded the entire route with an aerial camera system specially developed by DLR and made the high-resolution images available to the mission control centres as a situation picture.
This support service was ordered by the German Federal Police via the DLR Service ZKI-DE. Since 2013, DLR's ZKI has enabled Federal Authorities to obtain and analyse current geoinformation at short notice, thus offering public authorities new options for action. This cooperation between the Federal Ministry of the Interior (BMI) and DLR ensures that up-to-date, high-resolution remote sensing data is available to the authorities in crisis situations and to support civil and public security.
