Energy Systems Analysis
The Energy Systems Analysis department generates system-analytical knowledge, which we provide across sectors up to the global level and based in part on methods and modelling tools developed in-house.
Innovative Alternative Fuels for Aviation in Brazil
The demand for fuels in Brazil is rising rapidly with an annual growth rate of around 5%. Expanding the supply of existing alternative fuels in Brazil, such as biodiesel and ethanol, cannot keep pace with this development, or could lead to increased, undesirable environmental side effects. In the National Strategy of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTIC), therefore, alternative fuels are a priority in order to continue to meet growing demand with innovative technological alternatives while contributing to reducing greenhouse gas emissions.

Synthetic fuels (e-fuels) are produced CO2-neutrally using electricity from renewable energies (RE) and carbon sources. For this purpose, electrolysis processes and Fischer-Tropsch reactors are used. Subsequently, in a conventional refinery process, certified kerosene is produced for use in aircraft. Synthetic fuels can either be used directly in conventional vehicles or combined with conventional fuels, making them a significant option for the sustainable transport of the future, especially in aviation. The aim of the project is the further development of fuels from renewable energies (solar, wind, hydropower but not primarily biomass) and their conversion into aviation use in Brazil. Thus, impulses of global reach for climate protection can be set.
The project is being carried out in close cooperation with the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) and the Brazilian Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (MCTIC) as the Brazilian sponsor. The project approach includes strategy development, scientific cooperation, potential research as well as know-how and technology transfer. It works closely with German and Brazilian research institutions and the industry of both countries.
