  • The Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures has been based in Sankt Augustin since 2020.
  • In a few years, the institute will move into its own building, including a test hall, on the site „Auf dem Butterberg“.
  • The further procedural steps for the development plan are currently being initiated.

A science and start-up park is planned for the site „Auf dem Butterberg“ in Sankt Augustin. On August 22, a meeting of the City of Sankt Augustin's Environment and Urban Development Committee will decide on the presentation of the planning documents for the site. The main committee is then due to make a decision on September 6 so that the resolution on the development plan can be passed at the beginning of 2024.

The Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures will also be part of the campus. In a few years, the institute will move into a multi-storey office building on the Butterberg. An experimental hall will be built next to the office building at the same height so that the scientists can carry out their research directly on site.

„We will have the best conditions for our work on the new campus,“ explains Michael Langerbeins, acting head of the institute. „And the proximity to Bonn-Rhein-Sieg University of Applied Sciences will provide us with interesting opportunities for cooperation.“

The city wants the site to become a „green campus“ with intensive green roofs, photovoltaic systems and areas for rainwater infiltration. The DLR has already signed the land purchase agreement at the end of 2021. In addition to the Institute for the Protection of Terrestrial Infrastructures, the Institute for AI Safety and Security will also move to the new campus. Both institutes are currently housed near the city hall in the city center of Sankt Augustin.
