Background

The Founding

In our connected world, satellite navigation is an indispensable tool for our daily lives – from finding the nearest café to the use of fertilisers in agriculture. Several countries have their own Global Satellite Navigation Systems (GNSS).

Strengthening European research and economy

The European satellite navigation system Galileo and other global satellite navigation systems form a central infrastructure of our modern society. The services provided by these systems will become increasingly influential in many areas, such as mobility, sustainability and resilience. The German Aerospace Center (DLR) has played an important role in this from the very beginning with its extensive and far-reaching research activities and the operation of one of the two Galileo control centres in Oberpfaffenhofen.

The Galileo Competence Center (GK) was founded on 27 June 2019 to continue actively shaping and expanding the future of navigation. The focus here is primarily on the technical implementation and demonstration of future-proof concepts and technologies. Our DLR partners provide the scientific basis for this in joint topics and projects. With this focus, the Competence Center is the first institution of its kind at DLR and thus complements the existing DLR institutes and facilities.
